Panama TR4 disease is the greatest threat to banana production worldwide. There’s a lot at stake – 95% of Australia’s bananas are grown in Far North Queensland. This industry supports our vibrant community with jobs and produce.
Here’s some tips on how you can protect our banana industry from TR4:
Don’t enter banana farms without permission. Watch this video from banana growers to understand why.
Don’t spread the disease. If you visit a farm follow the rules. Come clean, leave clean. Watch this video to understand what this means.
Don’t move banana plants or planting material. Only buy banana plants from a Quality Approved Banana Nursery.
Educate yourself about this disease and how it’s spread. There is lots of information in the Grower Kit.
Suggest that your workplace undertakes a voluntary short learning module. Let your local growers know that you’re serious about protecting the community from Panama TR4.
Importantly, support your local industry by buying bananas! Panama TR4 does not affect the fruit, and it is currently contained to 11 farms in the Tully Valley. The banana industry is a dynamic part of communities across Far North Queensland - and every banana you buy supports a local farming family.
