A practical approach to biosecurity

Meet Kim Prins

Kim’s worked on sheep farms and crocodile farms, been involved in feral pig control programs, and led on-ground operations as head field officer for a farming group. Now, he’s part of Grower Support (Biosecurity).

Kim Prins brings a practical approach to his work with the Grower Support (Biosecurity) team.

Drawing on a background in horticulture, Kim has hit the ground not so much running – but rather at just the right speed to monitor farms for signs of Panama TR4 and support growers with biosecurity.

Kim has spent much of his career working across rural Australia. He’s worked on sheep farms and crocodile farms, been involved in feral pig control programs, and led on-ground operations as head field officer for a farming group. Along the way, he’s built a strong understanding of the challenges growers face and the importance of practical solutions that work on farm – not just in theory.

“This is the kind of work I like and, better yet, it gives me chance to get to know the banana growing regions of Far North Queensland,” Kim said.

“While I’ve worked across a pretty diverse range of farms, the one thing I’ve always enjoyed is helping producers. I’m really looking forward to doing more of that in this role.”

As a Field Officer with Grower Support (Biosecurity), Kim works alongside growers to help manage biosecurity risks and support good on-farm practices. He’s part of the team that will visit your farm for surveillance, but can also assist if you need some advice around biosecurity, or connect you with the right ABGC person to do so. Kim understands that trying to prepare for pest and disease threats can add pressure to already busy operations, so he aims to take a practical, supportive approach.

“I’ve been on both sides of these challenges,” Kim said. “I understand the frustrations growers face and how biosecurity issues can impact day-to-day operations. I’m keen to work with growers to reduce that pressure wherever I can.”
